Job Summary


The Alvira laboratory at the University of California San Francisco-Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Staff Research Associate with expertise in cellular or molecular biology. The Alvira laboratory performs translational research aimed to understand the mechanisms that control postnatal lung development with the long-term goal of leveraging this information to develop strategies to enhance lung growth and repair after injury. The Alvira lab employs mouse models of human disease, primary cells, and human tissue samples to understand the role of the pulmonary endothelium in mediating postnatal lung growth, developmental transition of select pulmonary endothelial cells, and the identification of how endothelial dysfunction contributes to impaired lung growth and pathologic pulmonary vascular remodeling. The successful candidate will the ability to organize division operations in an efficient and effective manner through improving processes, procedures, and systems; and excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to effectively lead and motivate others. The successful candidate would have in depth expertise in cellular or molecular biology or physiology, including the isolation and culture of primary cells, and proficiency in a variety of standard methodologies including gene silencing and overexpression, immunocytochemistry, western immunoblot analysis, qPCR, in situ hybridization, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, ChIP and flow cytometry. In collaboration with PI, making innovative contributions pertaining to laboratory and/or experimental procedures, this candidate would consult with the PI on the nature and general plan of approach to basic research but then independently execute experiments using standard techniques and protocols on mouse models of disease and primary endothelial cells. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

Department Description

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine. The department is comprised of 18 divisions employing over 300 faculty, 83 fellows, 84 residents, 31 Post Docs and non-faculty academics and 170 staffs. The Department has annual clinical income from inpatient and outpatient activities totaling over $90 million and annual extramural funding (contracts and grants) exceeding $40 million. The department ranks 17th in the nation among Pediatric departments for funding from the National Institutes of Health.

The Department's clinical enterprise is based at the 183-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco, the 191-bed UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Mount Zion, Zuckerberg San Francisco General, and at a number of outreach clinics throughout Northern California, providing the Department with an unsurpassed opportunity to meet the needs of infants, children, and young adults throughout the Bay Area. In 2019, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals ranked in all 10 children's specialties in U.S. News and World Report.

The Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine is part of the UCSF SOM Department of Pediatrics comprising of approximately 45+ faculty, 20+ fellows and non-faculty academics, and 20+ research staff and MSP physicians. It is located in Mission Hall at Mission Bay campus. Our physicians provides clinical coverage at BCH-SF and Oakland. We have research space at both Mission Bay and Parnassus campuses.


Required Qualifications

BA/BS degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or a related science and two or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; and/or equivalent experience/training. Experience in a relevant laboratory setting, preferably working with either murine models of disease or primary cell culture.Proficiency in numerous basic cell and molecular biology techniques including cell culture, western immunoblot, PCR, immunofluorescence, FACS, and gene over-expression and silencing.Extremely strong written and oral communication skills.
